Strelic’s earn title in Frist Paul Leader Memorial
It may be fun, but it is also serious, the most prestigious team event in Southern California. That’s what anglers say about the Paul Leader Memorial, formerly the El Cajon Ford Two Day Team Open, where 57 teams took their shot at San Vicente and El Capitan, a day at a time, Sept. 15-16.

In the end, based on their final place standings at each event, the combined score of 199 points/38.96 pounds, (a first and a second place) carried the powerhouse father/son team of Jon and Wade Strelic to the title.

“We put a lot of time on the San Diego lakes this year. We really wanted to win the first Paul Leader Memorial ,” said Jon Strelic. “We used last week (El Cajon Ford Day Series finale at San Vicente) as our real time practice tournament. What we learned,” he added, “was the worm fish were not going to cut it.” Clearly it paid off as the team smacked 19.49 pounds, including a 6.48. “We fully committed to reaction fishing; we stayed after it all day.” Of their day on El Capitan, Sunday, Strelic noted, “We’ve had great tournaments there this year. We’ve had our finger on their pulse.”
However, as the days are getting shorter, the water is cooling and the lake level was rising. Although the team concentrated on handful of spots, the senior member of the team revealed, “The fish are changing. They are chasing bait and offshore more. We had to work hard all day long.”

Jon also told the crowd without his sponsor Anglers Marine, Ranger Boats, Mercury Marine, and Advance Plumbing he would not a have being able to travel around the county fishing FLW, BASS. We heard that WADE is going to following in his father footstep and go out on tour next year. Lets all wish him the best of luck with this new adventure.

Taking second place overall, were Herman De La Garza and Tom Larson who had cookie cutter weights of 16 pounds, despite fishing two different reservoirs. Their finish included a fourth place on El Capitan and a second place on San Vicente for their respective rounds. Their catch also included a 7.64-pound slug, for Big Bass of the tournament taken by Larson. The fish came off a tree on the north shore of San Vee on a 4-inch Roboworm, earning the pair an additional $1500 to their $3500 second place money The Duo took home $5,000- in cash. “On both lakes it was a morning bite,” said De La Garza and he reported he and Larson spent much of their time fishing in 25 feet, down from the 15 to 20 feet that had been more common at Cap. “El Cap was on fire in the morning and then pretty good later. We caught 30 fish, only one under two pounds.”

As for third place, the defending Open champions, Another father and son team of Mike and Kevin Martin finished with 32.04 pounds, catching 15.26 pounds at San Vee and 16.78 pounds at El Cap. “It was pretty exciting,” said Kevin, noting, “Low light was best.” Having fished San Vicente the week before in the Day Series, the younger Martin reported, “We were more dialed in and used heavier line. We had a limit in 40 minutes,” relying on a 7-inch, Texas-rigged worm. “At both lakes they were feeding on crawdads; some of the fish had tentacles sticking out of their throats. They bit first thing at both lakes,” but he added, “when the wind picked up about noon we picked up a few upgrades on a good-looking point.” The father and Son team took home a $2,500 check for their effort.

Over the last 19 years the tournament has been held on a Monday, Tuesday format since most of the fisherman work on those day this year we decided to move to a Saturday and Sunday format it Seams to have a positive effect all the fisherman are excited bout the 10,000 guarantee first places and the Sat, Sun format. Next year we are looking to double the entries so mark down September 21,22 2019 on your calendar for the highest cash payback team tournament event in Southern California
